Jesus Christ is the Word of God that spoke and created all things (John 1:1-
14). He is the one who said, “Let there be light…and let us make man in our
own image.” All things happened when he spoke and because of his word
the world is maintained until he speaks it into a new heaven and a new earth
in the paradise of God. This earth and its elements will melt with fervent
heat (2 Peter 3:9-ff). Perhaps knowing this will motivate some to repent, but
it will definitely make the sceptic and the pseudointellectual harden their
heart. As surely as the Word of God to Pharaoh hardened his scientific head
(nothing like what Moses said had ever happened before). According to his
doctors, Moses was a trickster and no one should pay attention to his “Word
from the God of Israel.” In our day, that same God has spoken through Jesus
Christ our Lord (2 Peter 3) and the Holy Spirit inspired Apostles who have
received the same response. Some believed and were baptized (verse 21) and
others hardened their hearts due to pride. They might have been saved by
humbly complying with the Word, but their nature speaks rebellion leading
to destruction. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall
come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural
affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of
those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more
than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power
thereof: from such turn away (2 Tim. 3).” Such rebellion against the truth
deserves Pharaoh's reward. Our obligation is never-changing, we are to
“preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort
with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come (Now!) when
they will not endure sound doctrine (2 Tim. 4:1-4).” Even though the Word
is able to make dry bones come alive and forever resurrect the dead from sin,
some fight against the grace of God, the gift of Christ, and his gift of the
Holy Spirit.
