Inquiring of Baalzebub?

Seeking advice is commendable, but be careful about who you are asking -
your source could get you and others dead! In Ahaziah’s situation this is
exactly what happened. He was in Samaria as king of Israel, fell though a
lattice in his upper chamber, was sick toward death, and sent messengers
to inquire of Baalzebub. When the angel of the Lord came to Elijah, the
prophet of the Lord, he was told to challenge the king’s messengers to
Baalzebub with these words: “Is there not a God in Israel?” (2 Kings 1:3).
Why Ahaziah would seek advice regarding life from the god of death is
perplexing at that time, but even more so today. What does Satan know
about life and what does the World know but slow suicide. Those in Ekron
who engage in self-worship have no good advice for the Christian. There
is God and he has provided everything we need for life direction (2 Peter
1:1 ff). Yet, many inquire of doctors, theatrics, sports, and celebrities who
praise themselves while taking advantage of the pseudointellectuals. Self-
deceived persons are always careful to deceive others for their own
advantage, but then sorcery has always followed this course so as to enrich
itself. The false prophets of Israel repeatedly misinformed kings like
Ahaziah and yet, they neglect men of God like Elijah in favor of ‘self-
sellers’. From the context of this story, we see that over 100 men died as
well as their leaders and king because they would not listen to “The Word
of the Lord” (2 Kings 1:16). Are we looking for life advice in all the
wrong places when we listen to the ‘experts’ and inquire of Baalzebub as
Ahaziah did? Any source other than the Word of God is not a good source
of advice when it comes to life, abundant and eternal. So let us make it our
practice to look always to Jesus (Hebrews 12:1 ff). He is still and will
always be able to direct his creation.
