There are few heroes in our world, and from Biblical studies that seems to
have been the case forever. There are not many Sampson’s, David’s, or
Joseph’s, but there is an abundance of those who demoralize and
demonize. A few seem to be noble and upright; but the majority do not
behave like Paul, Timothy, or Titus. For so long we have exalted
entertainers: movie stars, football players, sports figures, celebrities, and
etc. that we do no longer recognize real people. Virtue and courage are not
looked for nor considered. Money seems to be the criteria when it comes
to evaluating would be examples for ourselves and our children. We no
longer look to the disciples of Christ, church leaders, or ministers because
they are considered weak by the world’s standards. The way the world felt
about Jesus is no different than the way real Christians are viewed today
with the exception of those who know the Word. Those who know the
scriptures are able to discern Godly traits and imitate Biblical
characteristics. They will become heroes as they come to maturity just as
Timothy and Titus came to be like Paul. They followed diligently his life
as well as his instructions. Becoming like Jesus as Paul commanded them
to follow him “as I imitate Christ”. That is how heroes are and that is how
they become something other than selfish. They learn to serve (Philippians
2). They learn to be humble and to serve which is a lifelong process that
you can begin now by looking unto Jesus who is the author and finisher of
our salvation. A good place to start is Hebrews chapter twelve. With the
greatest hero of all time, but you could back up to chapter eleven and meet
the great ones of Old Testament history.
