Many a sincere Christian has questioned his salvation with Satan’s prompting. We
are inclined to focus upon our work, whether it is good enough to please the Lord,
while both we and especially Satan understand that it is not! It is Satan’s delight to
watch while we wallow in guilt instead of rising, rising to walk in newness of life
(Romans 6). It is a continual process and requires rehearsing in our spirit the truth
that has been given over and over, “we are the children of God” (Romans 8:14).
“We have not received the spirit of bondage again unto fear; but the Spirit of
adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). Something of great
consequence has happened in our experience, grace has been given through faithful
obedience, we were baptized, born again, according to His will (Romans 6:1-4 & 1
Peter 3:21). “The Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are the
children of God” (Romans 8:16). The result being that if we ask for fish, we do not
receive a serpent or if we ask for bread, we do not receive a stone. God gives good
gifts to his children, “And if children then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with
Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together”
(Romans 8:17). Our trials are not all because of sin, some are, but along with Job
we must become aware that Satan is real. He has license to afflict and to try our
faith, as gold in the fire, by which God’s purpose is accomplished and we are found
humbled by sin and yet more patient, more determined, and more faithful. His word
given by his Spirit make us reflect that any affliction at this present time is not
worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us (Romans 8:18).
Our reward is coming not because of our merit, but His. Our trust therefore is not in
anything that we do but in everything that He has already done. So, if the Spirit of
him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from
the dead shall also give life to your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you.
(Romans 8:11). Do you believe this? Do you believe the scriptures and the Holy
Spirit which testify that faithfulness saves forever (Matthew 7:21)? Then that
should give you peace. Why? Because we know that he is faithful to us even when
we are unfaithful to ourselves in doubting that his grace is greater than all my sin.
Repentance is a good thing. Amen!
