The eternal cry of each human being is answered only by our Creator. One of the
most familiar passages in the New Testament is Romans chapter eight where we
discovered that the triune God is available. The Holy Spirit is helping our
infirmities because we do not know ourselves or God’s will sufficiently, therefore
intercession is necessary. He pleads for us in accord with the inspired Word of God
because he knows (Ephesians 6) both it and our hearts. So, we are confident that our
needs will be realized as we love each other and love our Creator, conforming
always to his purpose. This purpose is that we become more and more like Christ
Jesus each moment, for which we were predestined (Romans 8:29). This is why we
were called, justified, and glorified. This is also why our God is for us, while Satan
and the world are considered of no consequence, and we are commanded not to
worry. Our God has already sacrificed His only begotten for us while we were “yet
sinners”. How then will He look out for those who love His son, our savior, and
conform to His likeness? Who can bring any valid accusation now that Jesus is our
defender and lives to make intercession for us at the right hand of God? We alone,
by our faithlessness, can revoke this privilege because nothing or no one else can
separate us from the love of God. Listen: tribulation, distress, persecution, famine,
nakedness, peril, or sword cannot; but selfishness, self-will, and rebellion can.
Death cannot, life cannot, angels cannot, principalities cannot, powers cannot,
things present cannot, things future cannot; and yet, our God refuses to save the
backslider without repentance. The entire revelation from Genesis through
Revelation is a history of those who were saved, made perfect, then fell from God’s
favor - like Adam and the six churches of Asia with whom Christ pleaded to repent.
The grace of God in Christ Jesus, as recorded by the Holy Spirit, is more than
adequate to keep us safe and saved if we choose. Intercede they do and yet it is our
will that must yield to their (His) will if intercession is to continue eternal.
